Police in GTA 6: What the Footage Shows and What Is Still Unexplained
Police cars, boats and helicopters in the press images, a pick-up that turns into a police raid in the Extended Look, and a six-star wanted level reported by TechRadar. What is shown, what is reported, and what Rockstar still has not explained.
Updated October 20, 2026: Rewritten after the August 27 Extended Look: the 'never mentioned' wanted-level table is replaced with what the footage shows (a mission that turns into a police raid) and what TechRadar reports (a six-star wanted level, attributed rather than confirmed). The pre-reveal 'what to watch for' section and a duplicated regional-policing section have been cut.

Law enforcement is the oldest mechanic in Grand Theft Auto. For most of GTA VI's marketing, police appeared only in still images - on land, on water and in the air - with nothing said about how they behave. The August 27 Extended Look changed that in part: it includes a mission in which a pick-up for Boobie Ike turns into a police raid, and TechRadar's breakdown of the footage reports a six-star wanted level. Rockstar itself still has not described the system in writing.
| Where police appear | Source |
|---|---|
| A pick-up for Boobie Ike that turns into a police raid | The Extended Look, August 27, 2026 |
| A cruiser stopped outside the Ocean View hotel at night, officer talking to a group | Official Vice City screenshot |
| A police boat and police helicopter pursuing a speedboat | Rockstar's own description of an Ultimate Edition image |
| Lucia handcuffed in a prison uniform with an officer | Official character screenshot |
| A helicopter and airboats converging in pursuit across marshland | Official Grassrivers screenshot |
The second row comes from Rockstar's own alt text for a Squalo boat image: 'a topdown view of a Squalo moving through the water, with a police boat close by and a police helicopter overhead'. The studio described a marine pursuit in a product photo caption.
What that establishes
More than it did before August, though still less than a description. Multi-domain police presence is a real design commitment, and Rockstar has depicted it on land, on water and in the air.
- Police raids feature in missions - shown in the Extended Look.
- Land police exist, with marked cruisers and foot officers.
- Marine police exist, with their own boats.
- Air support exists, in both a marine pursuit and a wetland pursuit.
- The prison system exists in fiction - Lucia served time in the Leonida Penitentiary.
- Pursuit as an activity is depicted at least twice in official material.
For a map with an island chain and a wetland, marine police are not decoration. If water is a serious traversal route, escaping across it needs to be contested, and Rockstar has shown that it is.

The wanted level: reported, not stated
Stars in the corner of the screen have been the series' signature UI element since 1997. TechRadar's breakdown of the Extended Look reports a six-star wanted level in the footage. PC Gamer lists six stars among details from leaked footage instead, and Rockstar has not described the system in writing - so this page treats six stars as reported, not confirmed.
| Question | Status |
|---|---|
| Is there a star-based wanted system | Reported by TechRadar from the Extended Look |
| How many levels | Six, according to TechRadar; not stated by Rockstar |
| How you lose the police | Not described |
| Whether response differs by region | Not described |
| Whether there is a bounty, arrest or hospital penalty | Not described |
| Whether disguises affect police attention | Disguises are shown in the Extended Look; any effect on police is not described |
| Whether police AI has been rebuilt | Not stated |

Twenty-five years of the same mechanic
The wanted system is the oldest continuous mechanic in the series, and it has changed shape in almost every entry. Knowing the trajectory is the best available basis for guessing at GTA VI's.
| Game | Levels | Losing the police |
|---|---|---|
| GTA III / Vice City / San Andreas | Six stars | Pay-and-spray, or outrun the radius |
| GTA IV | Six stars | Escape a search radius shown on the map |
| GTA V | Five stars | Break line of sight and leave the search cone |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Bounty system, not stars | Escape, then pay off the bounty |
| GTA VI | Six stars, according to TechRadar's reading of the footage | Not described |
If TechRadar is right, GTA VI returns to a six-star ceiling after GTA V's five. The GTA IV to GTA V change was substantial - from a radius you flee to a cone you break sight within - and it changed how chases felt more than any other single adjustment in that generation. Rockstar has form for rebuilding this system rather than carrying it forward, so the number of stars says little about how escaping works.
Why a multi-region map complicates it
This is inference, and worth labelling as such. Every previous GTA wanted system assumed one police force with broadly uniform behaviour. Leonida's published geography makes that assumption awkward.
- Vice City and Port Gellhorn are separate urban centres, presumably with separate forces.
- Mount Kalaga is a national park against a state border, which in the United States means federal jurisdiction.
- The Keys and Grassrivers are water, where the pursuing force would be marine.
- The Coast Guard is named in Rockstar's own copy, via Cal Hampton monitoring their radio.
- Ambrosia's informal authority is described as a biker gang rather than police.
That list is a design problem, not a feature list. Rockstar has not described regional policing, jurisdiction or any variation in response, and the Coast Guard - named in Cal Hampton's description - has never been described as a pursuing force. It is offered as a reason the system probably changed, not as evidence that it did.
The marine pursuit is the most concrete evidence
Rockstar's own description of a Squalo boat image reads: "a topdown view of a Squalo moving through the water, with a police boat close by and a police helicopter overhead." That is a pursuit described by the studio, in its own words, in a product photo caption.
| What that caption establishes | Certainty |
|---|---|
| Police boats exist | Stated |
| Police helicopters exist | Stated |
| They operate together | Depicted in one frame |
| They pursue the player | Implied by composition, not stated |
| Water is a contested escape route | Reasonable inference |
Combined with the Grassrivers frame showing a helicopter and airboats converging in pursuit, Rockstar's press images depict coordinated multi-vehicle law enforcement twice, in two different water environments. That is not something a studio builds for scenery.
TechRadar's breakdown of the Extended Look reports a six-star wanted level. Rockstar has not described the system in writing, and PC Gamer attributes the six-star detail to leaked footage, so treat the number as reported rather than confirmed.
Yes. Rockstar's own description of an official image refers to a police boat and a police helicopter pursuing a speedboat.
It is named. Cal Hampton is described as monitoring Coast Guard communications from home. Whether it functions as a pursuing force is unstated.
Lucia is described as having served time in the Leonida Penitentiary. Whether the player can be imprisoned as a mechanic has not been stated.
Rockstar has said nothing about police behaviour in GTA VI. The Extended Look shows a mission in which a pick-up turns into a police raid, which puts police inside the missions but does not explain how they behave in open play.

Heists in GTA 6: What the Extended Look Showed, and What It Didn't
Gas-station robberies, a getaway job for a bank robber and a pick-up that turns into a police raid are now in official footage. A GTA V-style heist system is not - here is what is shown, what is written, and what is only assumed.

GTA 6 Gameplay: Every Confirmed Feature So Far
What Rockstar has shown in the 26-minute Extended Look and stated in writing about how GTA VI plays - kept separate from what is only reported, and from what is still unknown.

GTA 6: What Is Still Not Confirmed a Month Before Launch
The Extended Look closed many gaps. What remains unannounced - PC, the online date, file size, unlock time, the map's size in numbers, property ownership - and the systems still only assumed from GTA V.
