GTA 6 Gameplay: Every Confirmed Feature So Far
What Rockstar has shown in the 26-minute Extended Look and stated in writing about how GTA VI plays - kept separate from what is only reported, and from what is still unknown.
Updated October 20, 2026: Rebuilt after the August 27 Extended Look: character switching, cover combat, kill-cams, a slow-motion aiming meter, four missions and a long list of activities are now shown in official footage, so the old 'not confirmed' table has been replaced. Reported details such as the six-star wanted level and 170+ animal species are now listed separately with their sources.

For years GTA VI gameplay coverage was built on the 2022 development leak and on inference from Red Dead Redemption 2. That changed on August 27, 2026, when Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look - 26 minutes 48 seconds of footage the studio says was "captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5". This page sorts what is known into four tiers: stated by Rockstar, shown in that footage, reported by named outlets, and still unknown.
Stated by Rockstar
| Feature | Source |
|---|---|
| Two playable protagonists, Jason and Lucia | Rockstar character pages and every trailer |
| The state of Leonida, in six regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga | Rockstar's regional material |
| A single-player experience | Rockstar's pre-order announcement, June 24, 2026 |
| PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, November 19, 2026 | Rockstar and Take-Two |
| Footage captured in-game on PS5 | Rockstar, for Trailer 2 and again for the Extended Look |
| Six radio stations and on-demand podcasts, which can be heard on foot through headphones | Rockstar Newswire, October 8 |
| Rated M (Mature 17+), with in-game purchases listed | ESRB rating entry |
Grand Theft Auto VI is a single player experience, coming November 19 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Shown in the Extended Look
The descriptions below come from Rockstar's video as broken down by PC Gamer, TechRadar and GamesRadar. 'Shown' means it appears on screen in official footage. Rockstar has not described most of these systems in writing, so how far each one goes is still for launch to settle.
| Feature | What the footage shows |
|---|---|
| Character switching | Swapping between Lucia and Jason on a single button, including a switch in the middle of a base jump |
| Cover combat | Gunfights fought from cover |
| Kill-cams | Kill-cam shots during combat |
| Slow-motion aiming | An aiming mode that slows time, with a meter, highlighting weak points in red and yellow. TechRadar calls it a 'focus meter'; Rockstar's own name for it has not been confirmed |
| Quick-time events | Prompts that offer a choice of action rather than a single input |
| Disguises | The protagonists using disguises |
| Character-specific jobs | Jobs meant for only one of the two protagonists |
Missions shown
- A 'pick-up' for Boobie Ike that turns into a police raid.
- Gas-station robberies.
- A getaway job escorting Raul Bautista.
- Bodyguarding Andrés de León of Megamundo at a party.
Named characters appearing in the footage include Boobie Ike, Brian Heder, Raul Bautista, Andrés de León, Nesto and Rayman.
Activities, from footage and from Rockstar's copy
Before August, nearly every named activity came from edition and regional descriptions. The Extended Look added a long list of things actually seen being done, and the two sources now overlap.
| Activity | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Fishing | Shown in the Extended Look; named in the Mount Kalaga description and the Squalo boat copy |
| Scuba diving | Shown in the Extended Look |
| Jet skis, kayaking, airboats and fanboats | Shown in the Extended Look |
| Dirt bikes and base jumping | Shown in the Extended Look |
| Track and street racing | Shown in the Extended Look |
| Gym and basketball | Shown in the Extended Look |
| Clubs and a strip club | Shown in the Extended Look |
| Hunting and off-road trails | Mount Kalaga regional description |
| Haircuts, facial hair, makeup, nails | Sara's Unisex Salon (Ultimate Edition) |
| Tattoos - over 50 designs by FAILE | Electric Fang Tattoo (Ultimate Edition) |
| Clothing | Stock 305, Goodtime Gear, Vice City Style |
| Vehicle modification | Rideout Customs (Ultimate Edition) |
| Vehicle storage, a weapon locker, stolen goods | Paradise Garage (Ultimate Edition) and the Shore Court garage (Vintage Vice City Pack) |
| Raiding a gang compound | PTT Youngin$ compound (Ultimate Edition) |
| Finding and restoring project cars | Classic Car Collection, a commission from Wyman (Ultimate Edition) |

What the footage does not settle
Seeing a feature is not the same as knowing how it works. The Extended Look shows character switching but not when it is available; it shows a slow-motion aiming meter but not what fills or drains it; it shows four missions but not how many there are or how the campaign is paced. Those answers arrive with the game, and anything more specific published before then has no source.
Why the single-player framing matters
Rockstar's June 24 announcement called GTA VI "a single player experience", and the only online element attached to launch is a free month of GTA+ for digital pre-orders, described in terms of the existing GTA Online. According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, an online component is expected in 2027; Rockstar has not confirmed that. A game built without a concurrent online mode has no reason to design its missions around later multiplayer reuse. Whether that produces a denser campaign is something only the finished game can show.
Yes. The Extended Look shows switching on a single button, including a swap from Lucia to Jason in the middle of a base jump. Rockstar has not described the rules in writing.
TechRadar's breakdown of the Extended Look reports a six-star wanted level. Rockstar has not described the system itself.
Not announced. GTA V added one in its later console release, but Rockstar has said nothing about one for GTA VI.
No. Rockstar describes GTA VI as a single player experience.
Unknown. Rockstar has not given a figure, and any number you see quoted is invented.
Not announced. Pre-orders and purchases before November 20 include the Shore Court garage near Ocean Beach, and the Ultimate Edition includes the Paradise Garage, but no system for buying property has been described.
Not announced. Rockstar has said nothing about fidelity or frame-rate options on either console.
