What Console Do You Need for GTA 6?

Current-gen only, no last-gen version, and no announced PS5 Pro mode. What you actually need, and what nobody has confirmed.

Updated October 20, 2026: Added the November 12 pre-load date, the Extended Look's PS5 capture disclosure and the reported but unannounced Q1 2027 PC window. Removed install-size comparisons that conflicted with our storage guide.

GTA VI runs on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That is the whole list - Rockstar's June 24 pre-order announcement describes it as "a single player experience, coming November 19 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S", and the ESRB rating covers the same two platforms. There is no PlayStation 4 version, no Xbox One version, no announced Nintendo platform, and no announced PC version. If you are on last-generation hardware, an upgrade is required rather than optional.

On PC: GamesBeat reported on October 13, citing anonymous sources and relayed by Tom's Hardware, that a PC version could arrive in the first quarter of 2027. Rockstar has not announced one, so it remains a report rather than a platform you can plan around.

Why there is no last-gen version

Rockstar has not published a technical justification, but the trailers make the case implicitly. The crowd and traffic density shown in the Ocean Beach material is well beyond what GTA V attempted, and pedestrian count is one of the hardest things to scale down - you cannot reduce it far without changing what the city is. Combined with a state-scale map, a last-gen build would be a different game rather than a lower setting.

This is a break from Rockstar's pattern. Both GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on the outgoing generation. GTA VI skipping last-gen entirely is a first for a mainline release.

Xbox Series S

The Series S is confirmed supported, which answers the most common question about it. What Rockstar has not published is how the game differs there - resolution, framerate, texture quality, or crowd density are all unaddressed. Series S has less memory and a weaker GPU than Series X, so differences will exist; their scale is unknown.

PS5 Pro

The game runs on PS5 Pro because it runs on PS5. Rockstar has announced no Pro-specific enhancement - no higher resolution mode, no framerate target, nothing. That silence is worth respecting rather than filling in: buying a Pro specifically for GTA VI means buying against an unannounced feature.

Articles listing GTA VI's PS5 Pro resolution or framerate modes are fabricating them. Rockstar has published no performance-mode information for any hardware.

Storage

No install size has been announced. What is known is when you need the space: digital pre-orders can pre-load from November 12, and the boxed Standard Edition is a download code rather than a disc, so every copy is a full download. Expecting something substantial is reasonable; quoting a number is not. Our storage and pre-load guide covers the planning in detail.

  • Install size - not announced.
  • Pre-load - opens November 12 for digital pre-orders.
  • Whether an external drive can run it - unannounced, though current-gen titles generally require internal SSD storage on PS5.
  • Day-one patch size - not announced.

What has and has not been said about performance

Rockstar's technical statements about GTA VI are capture disclosures, not performance figures. Everything else in this area is unpublished.

Any article quoting a GTA 6 frame rate or resolution is inventing it. The capture disclosures say the footage came from running PS5 builds; they say nothing about how fast those builds ran.

The Series S question

The Xbox Series S is meaningfully less capable than the Series X and has roughly 364GB of usable storage. Rockstar has said nothing about how GTA VI runs on it or how large the install is.

  • Developers have generally targeted lower resolutions on Series S rather than cutting content.
  • Microsoft requires feature parity, so the game cannot omit modes for that console.
  • Storage is the more pressing practical concern for Series S owners than performance.
  • Nothing about a reduced-size install for Series S has been announced.

The useful preparation for a Series S owner is space rather than expectation management. That has to be sorted before pre-load opens on November 12, not on launch day.

Will GTA 6 come to PS4 or Xbox One?

No. Rockstar has confirmed current-generation only and has not hinted at a last-gen version.

Is Series S getting a cut-down version?

It is supported. How the experience differs from Series X has not been published.

Should I buy a PS5 Pro for it?

Not on the basis of GTA VI specifically - no Pro enhancements have been announced.

How much storage should I free up?

No official figure exists. Given the scale, planning for a large install is sensible, but any specific number you see is invented. If you want to pre-load, the space needs to be free by November 12.

Is a PS Plus or Game Pass subscription needed?

Not for single-player. Rockstar describes GTA VI as "a single player experience", and no online mode has been announced, so there is currently nothing requiring a subscription.

Is GTA 6 coming to PC?

Rockstar has not announced a PC version. GamesBeat reported, citing anonymous sources, that one could arrive in the first quarter of 2027.
