Updated October 20, 2026: Rewritten around the actual results in Take-Two's August 7 filing: net bookings of $1.39 billion, the $8.0–8.2 billion outlook reiterated, Q2 guidance of $1.62–1.67 billion and a $34.1 million net loss. The pre-call speculation has been removed and the November 9 Q2 report added.

Take-Two Interactive reported first-quarter fiscal 2027 results on August 7, 2026. It was the first financial disclosure to overlap the Grand Theft Auto VI pre-order window: pre-orders opened on June 25 and the quarter closed on June 30. The short version is that net bookings came in at $1.39 billion, slightly above the company's own guidance, the full-year outlook was reiterated rather than raised, and no pre-order figures were given.

What the filing said about GTA VI

In numbers, very little - which was always the likely outcome. Publishers are not obliged to break out pre-order units for an unreleased title, and Take-Two did not. What the release does do is list GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, and tie the full-year outlook explicitly to the game's launch. A public company restating a date inside its financial guidance is the strongest routine confirmation a release date can get.

There was no PC version in the filing, no edition split and no unit count. Six days of pre-orders sit inside the $1.39 billion bookings line without being isolated from the rest of the business.

Reiterated, not raised

The fiscal 2027 outlook stayed at $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion. For context, Take-Two closed fiscal 2026 with net bookings of $6.72 billion, up 19% year on year, and management has consistently named GTA VI as the main driver of the increase. In a letter to shareholders on July 17, 2026, chief executive Strauss Zelnick said the company expects operating cash flow above $1 billion for the current fiscal year.

An upward revision would have said that internal pre-order data had beaten the model the guidance was built on. Holding it says only that nothing in the quarter moved the company off its plan. With nearly all of GTA VI's sales still months away, reiterating is the conservative default, not a warning - and it came with the launch date restated inside it, which is the part that mattered.

What Zelnick said on the call

According to Variety's report of the call, Zelnick described GTA VI pre-orders as "unprecedented and astonishing", gave no figures, and said Take-Two was "happy with the mix" without putting numbers to it.

Strong adjectives with nothing attached are the normal register for a pre-launch call. They tell you management is pleased with demand; they do not tell you by how much, and they are not evidence for or against any of the third-party estimates in circulation.

The third-party estimates, and how much to trust them

In the absence of company disclosure, the numbers circulating come from market researchers modelling card transactions and storefront data. Newzoo estimated roughly $180 million in digital pre-order spending across the United States and five major European markets during the final week of June alone, which it extrapolated to something near $260 million globally. Those are estimates built on sampled panels, not audited figures. They establish an order of magnitude, and Take-Two's filing disclosed nothing that would confirm or contradict them.

Bookings, revenue and why the two disagree

Take-Two reports two headline numbers each quarter and they routinely point in different directions, which is the largest single source of confused coverage around this company. Q1 is a small example - a $1.39 billion bookings line alongside a GAAP net loss of $34.1 million - and the November launch will make the gap between the measures far larger.

MeasureWhat it capturesWhen GTA VI shows up
Net bookingsThe value of everything sold in the period, including pre-ordersFrom June 2026 onward, quarter by quarter
GAAP revenueValue recognised as delivered under accounting rulesLargely from the December 2026 quarter
Deferred revenueMoney taken but not yet recognisedBalloons between now and launch, then unwinds
Operating cash flowCash actually receivedRises with pre-orders, ahead of revenue

The practical consequence is that a large bookings figure and a GAAP loss can sit in the same quarter without either being misleading. In Q1 the $43.4 million impairment was larger than the net loss itself. For a pre-launch period, bookings is the demand signal; headlines that lead on the loss are technically accurate and analytically thin.

The rest of the portfolio still matters

It is easy to read every Take-Two disclosure as a GTA VI disclosure, but the company is considerably broader than one game. In a quarter containing only six days of pre-orders, the rest of the business did most of the work. A 3% year-on-year dip in that quarter says little about GTA VI either way.

  • NBA 2K, which delivers reliable recurring consumer spending and lands its annual release in the September quarter.
  • Zynga's mobile portfolio, the largest contributor by user count and the most sensitive to advertising conditions.
  • GTA Online and Red Dead Online, which have carried recurrent spending for years and are the closest available proxy for what a future GTA VI online mode could earn.
  • The catalogue - GTA V continues to sell in volumes that would flatter most publishers as a new release.

What to watch on November 9

Take-Two reports second-quarter fiscal 2027 results on Monday, November 9, 2026, after market close, with a call at 4:30 p.m. ET. That is ten days before launch and three days before pre-loading opens. The quarter runs from July 1 to September 30 - the first full quarter of GTA VI pre-orders - and the company guided it to net bookings of $1.62 billion to $1.67 billion.

  1. The guidance line: reiterated, raised or cut, and whether November 19 is restated inside it again. Ten days out, a restated date is about as firm as confirmation gets.
  2. Whether Q2 bookings land inside the $1.62–1.67 billion range. A large beat would be the first numerical hint of pre-order scale; Take-Two is still unlikely to isolate it.
  3. Any first comment on a PC version or on online timing. Rockstar has announced neither; Bloomberg reported on October 14 that the online component is expected in 2027, which Rockstar has not confirmed.
  4. The language around pre-orders. After "unprecedented and astonishing" in August, a change of adjective in either direction would be notable.

The prepared remarks are scripted and the Q&A is not. If you only have time for part of the call, the Q&A is where anything unplanned happens.

Did Take-Two announce GTA 6 pre-order numbers?

No. According to Variety's report of the August 7 call, Strauss Zelnick called pre-orders "unprecedented and astonishing" but gave no figures. The first six days of pre-orders are inside Q1 net bookings of $1.39 billion without being broken out.

Did the earnings report change the release date?

No. The filing lists GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, and ties the full-year outlook to "the November 19th launch of Grand Theft Auto VI."

Did Take-Two raise its guidance?

No. The fiscal 2027 net bookings outlook was reiterated at $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion. Q2 guidance was set at $1.62 billion to $1.67 billion.

Why did Take-Two report a loss?

The GAAP net loss was $34.1 million, including a $43.4 million impairment. Revenue for an unreleased game is deferred, so for a pre-launch quarter net bookings is the line that reflects demand.

When is the next Take-Two report?

Q2 fiscal 2027 results are due on Monday, November 9, 2026, after market close, with a conference call at 4:30 p.m. ET.
