What GTA Online's 2013 Launch Tells Us About GTA 6
GTA Online arrived two weeks after GTA V and barely worked for a fortnight. The timeline, what went wrong, and why it is the best available guide to what Rockstar does next.
Updated October 20, 2026: Added Bloomberg's October 14 report that GTA VI's online component is expected in 2027, and corrected the GTA+ reference: the free month comes with digital pre-orders, not the Ultimate Edition.

There is exactly one precedent for how a Grand Theft Auto online mode arrives, and it is worth knowing in detail. Rockstar calls GTA VI "a single player experience" and has announced nothing about online; Bloomberg reported on October 14 that GTA VI's online component is expected in 2027. The 2013 story is the best guide to what that arrival might look like.
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| September 17, 2013 | GTA V launches on PS3 and Xbox 360 |
| October 1, 2013 | GTA Online launches as a free update - two weeks later |
| Early October 2013 | Severe connection failures, lost characters, unusable lobbies |
| Mid October 2013 | Rockstar offers in-game compensation to affected players |
| 2013 onward | Continuous content updates for more than a decade |
| 2017 | Shark Cards and business content become the dominant revenue model |
| March 2022 | Standalone current-generation release |
| 2026 | Still live, still sold, GTA+ subscription active |
The two-week gap is the number people remember, and it is the least transferable part of the story. In 2013 Rockstar shipped online as a free update to a game already on shelves. The 2026 situation - with an existing, profitable GTA Online still running - is structurally different.
What actually went wrong in 2013
The launch failure was not a small wobble. For roughly a fortnight, a large proportion of players could not create a character, could not join a session, or lost progress when they did.
- Character creation failed repeatedly, leaving players stuck in loading screens.
- Cloud saves were unreliable, and some characters were permanently lost.
- Matchmaking could not place players into sessions at the volumes attempting to connect.
- Rockstar published a public apology and issued in-game currency as compensation.
The scale was the cause. Nothing at the time had attempted to onboard that many concurrent players into a persistent world in a fortnight, and the infrastructure assumptions did not survive contact with the actual number.

Why that argues for separation
If GTA VI's launch is as large as every forecast suggests, an online mode attached to it would face the 2013 problem multiplied. Separating the two removes the single largest technical risk from the single largest sales event.
| 2013 | 2026 |
|---|---|
| Online shipped 2 weeks after launch | No online at launch; Bloomberg reports 2027 |
| No existing GTA online product | GTA Online is live and profitable |
| Free update to an existing purchase | Unknown - nothing announced |
| Launch-scale concurrency untested | Far larger install base and expectations |
| Compensation issued after failure | Reputational cost of a repeat would be much higher |
What the decade after tells you
GTA Online's real lesson is not the launch. It is what the mode became: a live product with a content cadence, a currency, a subscription and an economy that outlived two console generations and kept a 2013 game commercially relevant into 2026.
That is the thing Take-Two will not want to give up, and it is the strongest structural reason to expect a GTA VI online product eventually. Bloomberg's October 14 report that one is expected in 2027 fits that logic; the company itself has said nothing.
Do not read any of this as a prediction with a date. Rockstar has never acknowledged a GTA VI online mode; 2027 is Bloomberg's reporting, not an announcement.

The differences that matter most
- In 2013 there was nothing to cannibalise. In 2026 there is a working revenue stream that a new online mode would compete with directly.
- In 2013 online was announced before launch. For GTA VI, Rockstar has announced no online mode at all; if Bloomberg's 2027 report is right, the gap will be many months rather than two weeks.
- In 2013 the technology was new to Rockstar. It is not now, but the scale is unprecedented again.
- In 2013 GTA V had no premium price ceiling. GTA VI is $79.99, and monetising further on top of that is a harder public case.
What GTA Online became, in numbers
The reason this precedent matters is not the two-week gap. It is what the mode grew into, and why a publisher would be reluctant to disturb it.
| Dimension | GTA Online |
|---|---|
| Lifespan so far | Over twelve years, 2013 to 2026 |
| Console generations spanned | Three - PS3/360, PS4/One, PS5/Series |
| Standalone release | March 2022, sold separately from GTA V |
| Subscription | GTA+, still sold in 2026 |
| Content model | Free major updates funded by in-game currency sales |
| Relationship to GTA V's story | Separate characters, separate progression, shared map |
A twelve-year-old mode with an active subscription is not a legacy product. It is the thing Take-Two would be competing with if it shipped a GTA VI online mode in November, which is the single strongest argument for the separation.
Why the map matters to the timing
GTA Online launched two weeks after GTA V partly because it reused the same map, the same vehicles and the same systems. The world was already built and tested; what was new was the networking layer.
- Reusing an existing map removes the largest content cost from an online launch.
- A GTA VI online mode would presumably reuse Leonida the same way.
- That makes a post-launch online release cheaper to build than it sounds.
- It also means there is no content reason it could not follow reasonably quickly - only a commercial one.
That reasoning explains why people expect a GTA VI online mode. It is not evidence that one exists: Rockstar has never acknowledged development of one, and Bloomberg's report is the only sourced sign that it is coming.
The 2013 failure in the studio's own words
Rockstar published an apology during the launch period and issued in-game currency to affected players. For a studio that rarely comments on anything, a public acknowledgement of failure is unusual, and it presumably informed everything since.
Every Rockstar online launch after 2013 - Red Dead Online's staged beta, GTA Online's current-generation relaunch - has been rolled out more cautiously. That pattern is the best available guide to how a GTA VI online mode would arrive, whenever it does.
Two weeks. GTA V released September 17, 2013 and GTA Online followed on October 1.
Nothing suggests so. Rockstar has announced no online mode, and Bloomberg reported on October 14 that it is expected in 2027.
Yes. Widespread connection failures and lost characters for roughly a fortnight, followed by a public apology and in-game compensation.
Yes. It is still live in 2026, and Rockstar is still selling GTA+ subscriptions for it.
No shutdown has been announced. Digital GTA VI pre-orders come with a free month of GTA+ for GTA Online, which points the other way.

Why GTA 6 Has No Online Mode at Launch
Rockstar calls GTA VI 'a single player experience'. What that wording rules out, what it leaves open, Bloomberg's 2027 report, and the GTA+ detail that confirms the split.

GTA Online is thirteen years old and still generating revenue. What Rockstar has said about its future, and what the business logic suggests.

Microtransactions in GTA 6: What $79.99 Does and Does Not Buy
Shark Cards funded GTA Online for a decade. GTA 6 ships at $79.99 as a single-player game - and its ESRB rating lists In-Game Purchases. What that does and does not tell you.
